Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Episode 30: The Rockstar

With the out of order way that the episodes are put onto Netflix, I get confused sometimes with the chronology of the series.  The episode that I’m about to write about is an episode that got me really confused.  However, when I look at an episode order list, this episode is in the right place.  That only helps to confuse me more.  I will explain why in a minute or two.

I’ve noted a few things that I think help to make Mighty Morphin Power Rangers a stronger show in past installments of my episode write-ups.  First is the story arcs that they’ve done.  Green with Envy is their best work, and aside from the clip show bit, Island of Illusion was pretty darn good too.  When the writers make stories that last more than an episode, it strengthens the quality of the show.  The writers also know how to use the Japanese footage in a way that fits in with their high school issues.  It all works.  Finally, there are the lessons that they give to the children who are the demographic for the show.  These lessons can teach the children how to be better, nicer people.

The episode I am on is one of the lesson episodes.  It uses martial arts and the Power Rangers to teach children about their own confidence.  There is a lot to like about the episode, so I’m going to tell you what the episode was now.

Season 1, Episode 30: The Rockstar

Billy, Trini, Kimberly, and Zack are going on a trip.  I don’t know where, but it doesn’t matter.  What matters is why Jason isn’t going on the trip.  Jason is staying behind to hang out with his young cousin Jeremy.  Jeremy loves the Power Rangers and wishes he could meet them some day.  His wish will soon come true.

Jason takes Jeremy to the beach.  Before showing Jeremy some martial arts moves, Bulk tries to start a fight.  Jason dodges Bulk’s kicks and makes Bulk fall onto a pizza.  Then Jason takes Jeremy to the sand and starts showing him some moves.  When Jeremy gets frustrated after not doing one of the moves properly, Jason drops this knowledge: “I was really insecure but martial arts helped me build my confidence.”  This is an episode about becoming more self-assured!

While the two cousins are training, some putties show up to ruin the day.  Jason and Jeremy fight them off and find a bottle with a map that will lead them to the Mirror of Destruction.  Rita Repulsa planned this and sends Scorpina to get the Mirror of Destruction from them.  Zordon gets all of the Power Rangers together to fight off Scorpina and a monster made of rocks, called Rockstar.  Rockstar can shoot rocks from his stomach and trap people under them.  He does this to Jason, and Jeremy runs away.

Jeremy later ends up one-on-one with Rockstar and manages to explode him by using the Mirror of Destruction.  Then the Power Rangers show up to fight Scorpina and Goldar, and destroy the Mirror of Destruction.  They hang out with Jeremy for a bit, dressed as the Power Rangers.  A little while later, the gang is out of their Power Ranger suits, and Jeremy is telling them all about the crazy adventure he had.  The end.

The strange thing about this episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and the thing that got me confused, was the absence of Tommy Oliver.  Where was he during all of this?  Why wasn’t he going on the trip?  Why didn’t he come help fight?  I didn’t notice anyone mention him.  It was strange to have such a prominent character not be there with no reason at all for his not being there.

Other than that, it was a great episode about building your confidence.  Sure, it might have taken Rita Repulsa attacking Earth once again to show the lesson, but the lesson is there all the same.  Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is teaching children how to be better people, one monster at a time.

That’s it for this episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  What did I say, guys?  This one was a whole lot sooner than the last one, right?  I’d like to keep this train a rollin’.  I’ll see you for the next episode, hopefully really soon.  Not tonight soon, but within the week.
