Things I Learned From Movies 5: Jason Lives

I guess it’s been long enough.   Even though there aren’t many entries between this one and last time I did one of these, it’s been a while for any entries.   Why not start off with one of my favourite kinds.   Things I Learned From Movies returns. This time, I’m going to tackle the remake of Friday the 13 th .   The thing I learned from watching this remake was that you should never run after the guy holding the machete who clearly just killed your friend.   This lesson must be learned.   You can’t avenge the death of a friend by running into the open and getting yourself killed.   It just doesn’t work.   Think things through a little better.   I’m sure you can make a more appropriate plan that may not end in your blood being spilled all over the landscape. This lesson is an important lesson in horror movie survival.   Do not panic.   Do not do irrational things.   Think them through, straighten yourself, then bash the hell out of Jason’s head like the little child Corey Feldman

Ignorance Is Annoying

If you are reading this, you probably follow me on Twitter.   I can’t think of anyone else who would read my blogs since Twitter is the only place where I say I have a new blog entry.   Anyway, moving on, I’m taking the idea for this one from a twitter post I made yesterday.   Much like the phrase “You can’t judge a book by its cover,” it is my opinion that you can’t judge a film by its marketing. Films are rarely marketed to truly represent the film.   Most are marketed so as to get the largest number of butts in seats.   Take Inglourious Basterds for example.   The film was marketed as a revenge flick where a bunch of Jewish Americans take revenge on the Nazis.   The movie did have some of that, but was much more.   Most of the movie was in French, German, or even Italian.   This part was not shown in the trailers.   The Basterds were not the main focal point of the film which goes contrary to the presentation made through the trailer.   I guess we all know this by now. Why did

Things I Learned From Movies 4: Rules

Throughout our lives, we learn things about ourselves and about the world.   We learn through what we experience.   We learn through school.   We learn through books and film.   Film is a big one for me, whether it be documentary or fiction.   There are things that can be learned through any film. This week I’m going to look at the film Zombieland.   There is a rule that Columbus has that goes “Don’t be a hero.”   Near the end of the film, Columbus retracts the rule.   He realizes that some rules are made to be broken.   This is the lesson of this specific blog post.   You can’t confine yourself to a set of rules.   Sometimes you must do things against the rules. Sometimes this lesson may be taken to the extreme.   If you are going to learn, you need to moderate this lesson.   You cannot lose all rules.   Killing people is still bad.   Some rules are made to be broken.   That is not one such rule.   You should never abuse this lesson by breaking the law. The lesson this week is b
