Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers: Episode 6: Water You Thinking?

Previously in Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers, the kids took a day off to have some fun at a waterpark. The Moon Monsters decided to attack while the kids weren’t looking, which ruined the relaxing day. Bulk was turned into a monster, the Alien Rangers were called to fight, and the kids talked to the inner Bulk of the monster. The city was saved once again. It all wrapped up with Zordon telling the kids that they needed to go out to find the Zeo Crystal shards because they were the only way to fix the world.

Finally, we’re moving forward with the plan to fix the time-altered Earth. After five episodes of figuring out how to protect the Earth while the Power Rangers were incapacitated, a plan was put in place to turn things back to normal. The Power Rangers will begin their quest to find the Zeo Crystal shards. They will travel through time and space, gaining new powers and new friends along the way. That will all begin in…

Episode 6: Water You Thinking?
Billy, the kids, and the Alien Rangers headed down to some sort of quarry pit to get the adventure underway. The Alien Rangers opened up some a wormhole that each of the children jumped into. Rocky ended up in a small Mexican town where a piece of the Zeo Crystal was lodged in a volcano. It was causing the volcano to near eruption until Rocky got it. All the while, he was helped by a child that he discovered was his grandfather. Rocky returned home with his piece of the crystal.

While the Rocky adventure was going on, Billy was helping the Alien Rangers find a pure source of water to hydrate in. He took them to the aquarium to talk to the fish. The Alien Rangers discovered that there was a pure water source in a forest on the outskirts of town. The Blue Alien Ranger headed to the water source to rehydrate.

Unfortunately for him, Lord Zedd sent down a monster to attack in the woods. There was a little bit of a scuffle as the Blue Alien Ranger used swords against the monster. But he was too weak and had to resort to running away. Zordon got a hold of Billy, who sent the other Alien Rangers out to fight. They called on their Battle Borgs. The machines never came. Lord Zedd had put a shield around Earth that blocked the Alien Rangers’ calls into space. They brought in the Shogun Zords instead, built them into the Shogun Megazord, and killed the monster with one swipe of the flame sabre. That was the end of the conflict.

There was one other story going on, though. Rito Revolto and Goldar were below the Command Centre. They were trying to navigate their way through the tunnels so that they could plant a device that would blow everything up. If they were successful, the Command Centre would be no more. The two Moon Monsters split up, Goldar being smart enough to leave a trail of popcorn behind him in case he found a dead end and needed to get back to where he started. It was too bad Rito followed him, eating all the popcorn. The episode ended with them lost in the tunnels while the Alien Rangers, Billy, and Rocky waited for the other Power Rangers to return.

The quest for the Zeo Crystal shards pushed Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers into the next phase of its story. The Alien Rangers of Aquitar continued to protect Earth from the monsters sent from the Moon. But now the children were scattered through space and time, trying to find the shards. Once the shards were brought together, the world would be turned back to its proper time. With four episodes left, that should leave time to highlight each of the remaining Power Rangers as they find their crystal shards.

The most interesting thing about Water You Thinking? was that it was a very blue-centric episode of Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers. It was the Blue Alien Ranger who helped the children travel through time and space. He had been the weak Alien Ranger who needed to rehydrate in a pure water source. Pair that with Billy being the only remaining Power Ranger that could help the Alien Rangers protect Earth. The Blue Mighty Mophin Power Ranger was the aid to the Alien Rangers. Then there was Rocky finding his Zeo Crystal shard. He would become the Blue Zeo Ranger based on his Zeo Crystal shard. Everything was coming up blue.

There was still an issue with the stakes that Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers set up during the first five episodes. The Alien Rangers had to return to Aquitar because they couldn’t rehydrate on Earth. This left Earth defenseless. Yet, the next episode, they were contacted when a monster was attacking Angel Grove and quickly came to help. This episode showed that there was a pure water source on Earth that they could use to rehydrate. Why was there all the worry two episodes earlier? If the Alien Rangers could either travel from Aquitar to Earth quickly or rehydrate on Earth, there was no need for the children to worry that Earth would be left without protectors. The stakes that were built up were negated by the events of the two episodes that followed.

Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers was a mini-series that always ran on high gear. Every episode felt like it mattered. They each pushed the story forward in some way. Whether it was introducing the Alien Rangers, re-aging Billy, having the Alien Rangers leave the planet, or undergoing the Zeo Crystal quest, each episode made sure the overall story came first. It was the Power Rangers franchise going truly serialized, and the show was better for it. Did the seventh episode of the mini-series continue that? Come on back soon for a post about Along Came a Spider.
