Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Episode 10: Foul Play in the Sky

This post is a catch up post for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  Netflix has the episodes out of order, so certain episodes were moved to a later point in the season.  That isn’t a problem yet, as the story isn’t yet dependent on the order of the episodes.  Well, it mostly isn’t dependent on the order.

The first few episodes did have to be in a certain order.  The pilot needed to be the first episode in order to introduce the characters.  The next couple episodes also had to be in their specific order for the introduction of the watches, power crystals, and power weapons.  Other than that, there isn’t much reason that the order matters.

All of the episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers do have to be watched after the pilot, though.  None so far have been as important and this episode in terms of being after the pilot, though.  I’ll get to that after the episode summary.

Season 1, Episode 10: Foul Play in the Sky

This, to those that remember certain moments in the series, is the episode in which Kimberly flies a plane.  Other things also happened, but Kimberly flew a plane!  She landed it, too!  That’s crazy.

The episode started with Kimberly going for a plane ride with her uncle, Steve.  Bulk and Skull ask Steve if they can come along.  He lets them, even though Kimberly hates the idea.  However, all Hell breaks loose when Steve drinks a soda contaminated with a sleeping potion.  He falls asleep at the helm.  Bulk, Skull, and Kimberly are stranded in the air.

Rita Repulsa chooses this time to send another monster to Earth.  This time, it is a Snizzard, some sort of mixture of a snake and a lizard.  Continuing the trend of creepy things happening to the Power Rangers, the Snizzard ties them up with snakes and they struggle to break free.  They need Kimberly’s help.

Kimberly is busy in the plane.  She doesn’t know how to fly it.  Zordon gets Alpha 5 to coach her through a landing.  Conveniently, Uncle Steve wakes up as soon as they land.  Kimberly says she needs to go and runs away.  Bulk and Skull also run away because they are scared.

The Snizzard is about to defeat the Power Rangers when Kimberly shows up.  She destroys the snake arrow that it is about to shoot at the Power Rangers.  She then destroys the Snizzard with her power bow.  The Power Rangers saved Earth again, thanks to Kimberly.

There is one thing that stands out in this episode as a landmark moment.  There is a direct callback to a previous episode.  While Steve is flying the plane, Kimberly is looking over Angel Grove.  She makes mention of the mountains and there is a flashback to the first episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  The show is slowly beginning to build some continuity with this episode.  Ten episodes in, and it is beginning to become more than just a simple monster of the episode show, though it is still clearly a monster of the episode show.  It is adding some depth to the mythology of the show.  The events of the previous episodes have some effect upon what happens later in the series.  It’s great to see this begin, and I’m looking forward to more of it in the future.

That sums up my thoughts coming out of this episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  I want to watch some more of the show, so I’m going to head out.  I’ll see you when I write my next post.
