Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 3, Episode 24: A Different Shade of Pink, Part II

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers kicked of the A Different Shade of Pink story in a big way. Kimberly met Gunther Schmidt, who took her under his wing. She trained all night and day. Rita Repulsa sent down a slew of monsters, which took Kimberly away from her training for a few moments. Bulk and Skull started a plan to catch Gunther, who they thought was a super spy. And Katherine turned back to the side of good after remembering her Pan Global Games history. There were a lot of important things happening.

That will continue with this episode. Kimberly passed out from exhaustion, which will have to be resolved. Katherine is now good and primed to join the Power Rangers once Kimberly officially leaves the team. Bulk and Skull will be doing their thing, possibly with Lt. Stone involved. There’s a bunch that needs to happen, and the only way for it to happen is to get into…
Season 3, Episode 24: A Different Shade of Pink, Part II
Kimberly was brought into the hospital where she was treated for exhaustion. Katherine was by her side until she was told to leave so that the doctors could do their work. She got Billy and Tommy to the hospital and waited with them. Once Kimberly was awake, Rocky, Adam, and Aisha were called up. They had to fight Rito Revolto and some Tenga Warriors, however, which left Katherine as the only person with Kimberly. Katherine told Kimberly about what Rita had done to her. Kimberly sympathized with Katherine’s forced evilness and let her know that Tommy had gone through the same thing. The rest of the gang showed up and Tommy told Katherine that they had no hard feelings.

Rita and Zedd then sent Garbage Mouth down to the hospital with some Tenga Warriors to steal Katherine. They wanted to punish her for betraying them. The Power Rangers went out to meet them, minus Kimberly. She was told to stay in bed. There was a fight. Katherine was saved. Everything seemed happy. Only, it wasn’t. The villains had one last trick up their sleeves. They had a captured Ninjor and they were threatening to send him to Sea of Sorrow. The only way to save Ninjor would be to hand over Katherine. Tommy said that would never happen.

Bulk and Skull spent the entire time in the dirty laundry at the hospital. They brought Lt. Stone along to scout out Gunther Schmidt. It didn’t work out too well. The laundry cart they were hiding in rolled down the laundry chute. That was a six-story drop. They managed to survive with only minor injuries. When they left the hospital, they witnessed the fight against the Tenga Warriors and Garbage Mouth and fled in terror.

Speaking of the fights, there were two of them. The first fight against Rito and the Tengas was quick and sweet. The three newer Power Rangers were overwhelmed and called for help. Tommy and Billy showed up and everyone started kicking butt. It was mostly a basic field setting with some kicks and flips. There was one moment where a Tenga Warrior got kicked through the open passenger seat window of the Suzuki Sidekick the teens drove51. That was neat. The other fight was better. There were kicks and punches in the hospital parking lot. Garbage Mouth made some explosions in front of Katherine and the Power Rangers. Then he grew and trapped the Shogun Zords in a garbage can before they turned into the Megazord and killed him with a flaming sword. That was cool, if a little abrupt.
Middle episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers were sometimes a little rough. The episodes that started stories off were spent setting the stakes and introducing the story threads. The final episodes usually had the most entertaining action and finished off the story threads in ways that would impact the show going forward. Those middle episodes were left to progress things from Point A to Point B but didn’t always add much in between the points. This episode was a little different from most of the other middle episodes.

There were some important things that got revealed. The biggest of those was that Katherine was good and was able to fill everyone in on the fact that she knew about their powers. She could apologize for how she had acted. They immediately forgave her and took her in as one of their own. Another big moment was when Kimberly said she was going to quit gymnastics to remain with the Power Rangers. Nobody wanted her to do that because gymnastics had always been her passion. The other big thing was the Ninjor update. He had been captured back when the Power Rangers got their Shogun Zords. Now Rita and Zedd were ready to use him as leverage. These things were all going to lead to a great finale. Hopefully.

A couple weird things happened in A Different Shade of Pink, Part II. The first was that Rita completely gave up on Katherine after she found out that Katherine was good. She didn’t try to turn Katherine evil again. She basically just said “Okay” and moved on. It was a strange move for a character who had been the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers big bad for three seasons. The other thing was the amount of visitors that Kimberly could have in her hospital room. Once she was allowed to have visitors, the doctors said that it could only be one at a time. Tommy was the one who went in. He was called away to fight Tenga Warriors, so Katherine went back in. When the fight was over, everyone showed up in Kimberly’s room as if there wasn’t a one visitor rule. They were breaking hospital protocol like true teenagers with attitude.

The middle episode of the A Different Shade of Pink story is now in the books. It was a solid middle episode, though it very much felt like its own thing. Aside from the beginning bit that led into the hospital and the end bit with Ninjor, this could have stood on its own as just another single episode in the lead-up to Kimberly leaving and Katherine taking her place. It was still entertaining. It set up some good stakes for the final episode in the story, which will come up pretty soon. A Different Shade of Pink, Part III will be the next episode. See you when that post comes out.
